‘The Spot’ Community space is underway in Ulverston: Supported by High Winds
Nine community spaces in Ulverston have closed over the last decade. In 2024, the community took matters into their own hands to buy the town’s old auction mart and turn it into ‘The Spot’ community building. After another source of funding fell through, High Winds stepped in to fill the gap, donating £242,000 to help make the project happen. The Spot will house the Ulverston Food Project as well as a small hall, meeting rooms and festival workshop space. When Coronavirus struck the UK last year forcing the country to enter our first lockdown, community initiative Ulverston Food Waste Project launched an urgent appeal for more donations to help people in need throughout the local community. High Winds Community Energy Society saw the appeal and were able to make a donation of £7,000 which enabled the group to purchase two commercial sized fridges. Three renewable energy co-operatives unite to deliver community owned wind farm On July 11th 2017, three renewable energy co-operatives, High Winds Community Energy Society, together with Baywind Energy and Energy Prospects, and with the support of the ethical investment company Thrive Renewables, have acquired the Mean Moor wind farm in Cumbria. The wind farm comprises of three 2.3 MW Enercon turbines across the valley from the existing High Winds two turbines at Harlock Hill in south Cumbria. On Thursday December 1st, two High Winds Board Members John Malone and David Eastlick donned safety harnesses and climbed the 66m to the top of the turbine tower. They were joined by colleagues from Energy4All, Rachael Hunter and Paul Phare. The weather was kind to them and they enjoyed fantastic views of Morecambe Bay and could even see Blackpool Tower.
